After a leisurely two-hour drive, Jill and Jayce ended up at a quaint hotel north of Cannon Beach, where they booked a room with a giant four-poster bed, an ocean view and a fireplace.
Perfect.
They immediately put the bed through its paces, then followed a winding path to a semi-private beach, where they went for a brisk run, trying to keep ahead of the tide, which was coming in and threatening to engulf everythingâand everyoneâin its path. By then they were ravenous, and since Jill had been craving pepperoni pizza for some inexplicable reason, they had one delivered.
After that, she was back on the Paxton case, setting up a cozy office in the middle of the bed with files scattered around her while Jayce hung out on the redwood deck and watched a baseball game on his iPad.
And even though she was engrossed in the case, she couldnât help peeking at him through the sliding glass door from time to time. Checking on him, actually, since the conversation with his big brother had clearly bothered him. Johnny was his hero. No doubt about that. So his disapproval, coupled with some dire predictions, had had the desired effect.

But it had started out innocently when Caitlinâs father brought one of his vintage muscle cars into the shop where twenty-year-old Pax worked. Restoring such works of art was Paxâs passion. And when he laid eyes on Mr. Mooreâs Firebird, he had fallen in love for the first time in his life. Then he had fallen in love a second time when Mr. Moore brought sixteen-year-old Caitlin to the shop when he picked up the gleaming vehicle.
Caitlin had fallen just as hard, to the point of sneaking off with the mechanic for a few minutes of wild kissing behind the shop. They had exchanged numbers, and in the coming weeks she had borrowed the Firebird from her dad so she and Pax could race it. She had also celebrated their victories by inviting him to the pool house on the Moore estate, where they had wildly acrobatic sex right under Mr. Mooreâs nose.
The need for secrecy had been vital, since Pax would surely lose his job for seducing the daughter of the shopâs best customer. For that reason, and the fact that Caitlin was underage, Paxâs friends had begged him to break off the romance. And for very different reasons,
